The Lord is my Shepherd
25 June 2020
Key Verse: Psalms 23:1 “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.”
This is my prayer and hope yours also
These words express my heart’s desire, and my longing for an intimacy with you Lord. When you say “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,” (a) I believe in you Lord Jesus. Where do you feed your sheep? In Church? Then I will go there, so that I may find you there. In private prayer? Then I will pray without ceasing. In the Word? Then I will read it thoroughly. In your commandments? Then I will walk in them with all my heart. Tell me where you feed your sheep and I shall not want.
You are the Shepherd, and I will come before you, because there is no one but yourself that can supply all my needs. I cannot be satisfied when I am away from you. My soul hungers and thirsts for the living water of your presence. Lead me to the green pastures and still waters so I can feed and drink from the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
My rest comes from you for your yoke is easy and the burden light, oh that I will learn from you. Even if I am walking with the shadow of a rock over my head, I have no worries because you have promised to be with me always. Satan tells me I am unworthy; but then I have always been unworthy, and yet you Lord have loved me from before I was born, and my unworthiness will not be a bar to my having fellowship with you because you Lord shed your blood so that I am forgiven. It is true I am weak in faith, and often fall, but that weakness is the reason why I should always in your presence, and I am strengthened, and preserved in safety beside the still waters.
There is no reason why I should turn away from you, but there are a thousand reasons why I should not, for Jesus beckons me to come. If it were possible for you to withdraw yourself even a little, it would make me realise how much I need you constantly in my life. For I know you will lead me yet again to that sheltered brook. You Lord have prepared a place for me in heaven and in you my cup is overflowing. I know that your mercy is with me now and in eternity, because I can say with confidence “in all these things I am more than a conqueror through him who loved me. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus my Lord” (b)
Amen. (a)
